Canon 77D vs 1D

The Canon EOS 77D and the Canon EOS-1D are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in February 2017 and September 2001. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are based on an APS-C (77D) and an APS-H (1D) sensor. The 77D has a resolution of 24 megapixels, whereas the 1D provides 4.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 1D is considerably larger (88 percent) than the Canon 77D. Moreover, the 1D is substantially heavier (194 percent) than the 77D. It is noteworthy in this context that the 1D is splash and dust-proof, while the 77D does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor (as in the 1D) will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, while more compact options are available for the smaller-sensor camera (77D). Concerning battery life, the 77D gets 600 shots out of its LP-E17 battery, while the 1D can take 500 images on a single charge of its NP-E3 power pack. As can be seen in the images above, the 1D has a battery grip built in. This facilitates image-taking in portrait orientation and gives it additional battery power. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 77D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 86 percent) than the 1D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 77D vs 1D

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 77D features an APS-C sensor and the Canon 1D an APS-H sensor. The sensor area in the 1D is 65 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.3. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of chip-set technology, the 77D uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 7) than the 1D (DIGIC), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon 77D and Canon 1D sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon 77D offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixels, compared with 4.1 MP of the Canon 1D. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 11.56μm for the 1D). However, it should be noted that the 77D is much more recent (by 15 years and 4 months) than the 1D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.

The 77D has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during video recording.

The Canon EOS 77D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 25600, which can be extended to ISO 100-51200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS-1D are ISO 200 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-3200..

77D versus 1D MP

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The 77D indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the 1D does not. The highest resolution format that the 77D can use is 1080/60p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The 77D has one, while the 1D does not. While the built-in flash of the 77D is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The 77D has an articulated LCD that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in snapping selfies. In contrast, the 1D does not have a selfie-screen.

The 77D writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the 1D uses Compact Flash cards. The 1D features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the 77D only has one slot.

It is notable that the 77D offers wifi support, while the 1D does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D (unlike the 77D) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.

The 77D is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the 1D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 1D was succeeded by the Canon 1D Mark II.
