If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 77D is notably larger (10 percent) than the Canon 350D. In terms of weight, the two cameras are very close. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 350D nor the 77D are weather-sealed.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 350D vs 77D

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 77D is 1 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, the 77D uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 7) than the 350D (DIGIC II), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

With 24MP, the 77D offers a higher resolution than the 350D (8MP), but the 77D has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 6.41μm for the 350D). Yet, the 77D is a much more recent model (by 12 years) than the 350D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

The 77D has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during video recording.

The Canon EOS 350D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600 The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS 77D are ISO 100 to ISO 25600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-51200..

350D versus 77D MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the 77D offers substantially better image quality than the 350D (overall score 18 points higher). The advantage is based on 1.8 bits higher color depth, 2.5 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.6 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The 77D indeed provides for movie recording, while the 350D does not. The highest resolution format that the 77D can use is 1080/60p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The 77D has a touchscreen, while the 350D has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The 77D has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the 350D does not have a selfie-screen.

The 350D writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the 77D uses SDXC cards.

It is notable that the 77D offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the 350D does not offer wifi capability.

The 77D is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the 350D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 350D was succeeded by the Canon 400D.
