Canon 350D versus Canon 760D

The Canon EOS 350D (called XT in some regions) and the Canon EOS 760D (labelled Canon T6s in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2005 and February 2015. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The 350D has a resolution of 8 megapixel, whereas the 760D provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 760D is notably larger (12 percent) than the Canon 350D. Moreover, the 760D is markedly heavier (5 percent) than the 350D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 350D nor the 760D are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Concerning battery life, the 350D gets 400 shots out of its NB-2LH battery, while the 760D can take 440 images on a single charge of its LP-E17 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 760D was somewhat cheaper (by 6 percent) than the 350D at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 350D vs Canon 760D

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 760D is 1 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, the 760D uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 6) than the 350D (DIGIC II), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

With 24MP, the 760D offers a higher resolution than the 350D (8MP), but the 760D has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 6.41μm for the 350D). Yet, the 760D is a much more recent model (by 9 years and 11 months) than the 350D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

The 760D has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the 760D has a markedly higher DXO score than the 350D (overall score 10 points higher), which will translate into better image quality. The advantage is based on 0.8 bits higher color depth, 1.2 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.5 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The 760D indeed provides for movie recording, while the 350D does not. The highest resolution format that the 760D can use is 1080/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The 350D and the 760D are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The 760D has a touchscreen, while the 350D has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The 350D writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the 760D uses SDXC cards.

Both the 350D and the 760D have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 350D was replaced by the Canon 400D, while the 760D was followed by the Canon 77D.

Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS 350D:

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the 760D is the clear winner of the contest (16 : 2 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
