Canon 200D versus Canon 450D

The Canon EOS 200D (called Canon SL2 in some regions) and the Canon EOS 450D (labelled Canon XSi in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in June 2017 and January 2008. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The 200D has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the 450D provides 12.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 450D is notably larger (11 percent) than the Canon 200D. Moreover, the 450D is markedly heavier (16 percent) than the 200D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 200D nor the 450D are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Concerning battery life, the 200D gets 650 shots out of its LP-E17 battery, while the 450D can take 500 images on a single charge of its LP-E5 power pack.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 200D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 31 percent) than the 450D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 200D vs Canon 450D

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 450D is 1 percent smaller. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of chip-set technology, the 200D uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 7) than the 450D (DIGIC 3), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

With 24MP, the 200D offers a higher resolution than the 450D (12.2MP), but the 200D has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 5.19μm for the 450D). However, the 200D is a somewhat more recent model (by 9 years and 5 months) than the 450D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the 200D provides substantially higher image quality than the 450D, with an overall score that is 18 points higher. This advantage is based on 1.7 bits higher color depth, 2.6 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.6 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The 200D indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the 450D does not. The highest resolution format that the 200D can use is 1080/60p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The 200D has a touchscreen, while the 450D has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point or for making menu selections.

The 200D is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 450D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 450D was succeeded by the Canon 500D.

However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
