Canon 1D versus Canon R

The Canon EOS-1D and the Canon EOS R are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2001 and September 2018. The 1D is a DSLR, while the Canon R is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-H (1D) and a full frame (Canon R) sensor. The 1D has a resolution of 4.1 megapixel, whereas the Canon R provides 30.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon R is considerably smaller (45 percent) than the Canon 1D. Moreover, the Canon R is substantially lighter (58 percent) than the 1D. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Hence, you might want to study the specifications of available lenses in order to get the full picture of the size and weight of the two camera systems.

Concerning battery life, the 1D gets 500 shots out of its NP-E3 battery, while the Canon R can take 370 images on a single charge of its LP-E6N power pack. As can be seen in the images above, the 1D has a battery grip build in. This facilitates image-taking in portrait orientation and gives it additional battery power. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The Canon R was launched at a markedly lower price (by 65 percent) than the 1D, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1D vs Canon R

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D features an APS-H sensor and the Canon R a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the Canon R is 58 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.3 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, the Canon R uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 8) than the 1D (DIGIC), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon 1D and Canon R sensor measures

With 30.1MP, the Canon R offers a higher resolution than the 1D (4.1MP), but the Canon R has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.36μm versus 11.56μm for the 1D). Yet, the Canon R is a much more recent model (by 16 years and 11 months) than the 1D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

The Canon R has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The Canon R indeed provides for movie recording, while the 1D does not. The highest resolution format that the Canon R can use is 4K/30p.

 

Feature comparison: Canon 1D vs Canon R

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the Canon R has an electronic viewfinder (3690k dots), while the 1D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. One feature that is present on the 1D, but is missing on the Canon R is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the Canon R features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The 1D writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the Canon R uses SDXC cards. The 1D features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the Canon R only has one slot.

The Canon R is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the 1D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 1D was succeeded by the Canon 1D Mark II.

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. Also, please note that some of the review sites have changed their methodology and reporting over time.
