Canon 1D Mark IV versus Nikon Z7

The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV and the Nikon Z7 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in October 2009 and August 2018. The 1D Mark IV is a DSLR, while the Z7 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-H (1D Mark IV) and a full frame (Z7) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the Nikon provides 45.4 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon Z7 is considerably smaller (45 percent) than the Canon 1D Mark IV. Moreover, the Z7 is substantially lighter (45 percent) than the 1D Mark IV. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Hence, you might want to study the specifications of available lenses in order to get the full picture of the size and weight of the two camera systems.

Concerning battery life, the 1D Mark IV gets 1500 shots out of its LP-E4 battery, while the Z7 can take 330 images on a single charge of its EN-EL15b power pack. As can be seen in the images above, the 1D Mark IV has a battery grip build in. This facilitates image-taking in portrait orientation and gives it additional battery power. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The Z7 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 32 percent) than the 1D Mark IV, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1D Mark IV vs Nikon Z7

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D Mark IV features an APS-H sensor and the Nikon Z7 a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the Z7 is 65 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.3 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 45.4MP, the Z7 offers a higher resolution than the 1D Mark IV (16MP), but the Z7 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.35μm versus 5.70μm for the 1D Mark IV). Yet, the Z7 is a much more recent model (by 8 years and 10 months) than the 1D Mark IV, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the Z7 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The Z7 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

1D Mark IV versus Z7 MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the Z7 provides a better video resolution than the 1D Mark IV. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The Z7 has a touchscreen, while the 1D Mark IV has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The 1D Mark IV writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the Z7 uses XQD cards. The 1D Mark IV features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the Z7 only has one slot.

The Z7 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Nikon. In contrast, the 1D Mark IV has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the 1D Mark IV from Canon.
