Canon 1100D versus Canon G1 X

The Canon EOS 1100D (called Canon T3 in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G1 X are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2011 and January 2012. The 1100D is a DSLR, while the G1X is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (1100D) and an 1.5-inch (G1X) sensor. The 1100D has a resolution of 12.2 megapixel, whereas the G1X provides 14.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G1 X is notably smaller (27 percent) than the Canon 1100D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 1100D nor the G1X are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G1X has a lens build in, whereas the 1100D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 1100D gets 700 shots out of its LP-E10 battery, while the G1X can take 250 images on a single charge of its NB-10L power pack.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1100D vs Canon G1 X

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1100D features an APS-C sensor and the Canon G1 X an 1.5-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G1X is 19 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.85. The sensor in the 1100D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G1X offers a 4:3 aspect.

Technology-wise, the G1X uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 5) than the 1100D (DIGIC 4), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon 1100D and Canon G1 X sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the G1X offers a higher resolution of 14.2 megapixel, compared with 12.2 MP of the 1100D. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 4.30μm versus 5.15μm for the 1100D). However, it should be noted that the G1X is a somewhat more recent model (by 11 months) than the 1100D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage.

1100D versus G1X MP

Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). The Overall DXO ratings for the two cameras under consideration are close, suggesting that they provide similar image quality. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the G1X provides a better video resolution than the 1100D. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/24p, while the 1100D is limited to 720/30p.

Both the 1100D and the G1X have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 1100D was replaced by the Canon 1200D, while the G1X was followed by the Canon G1X Mark II.

  • More modern: Was introduced somewhat (11 months) more recently.

If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the G1X is the clear winner of the contest (9 : 4 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.

In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the 1100D or the G1X. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is why expert reviews are important. The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
