Canon 100D versus Panasonic G7
The Canon EOS 100D (called Canon SL1 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in March 2013 and May 2015. The 100D is a DSLR, while the G7 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (100D) and a Four Thirds (G7) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 15.8 MP. Body comparison: Canon 100D vs Panasonic G7

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 100D and the Panasonic G7are of equal size. However, the G7 is slightly heavier (1 percent) than the 100D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 100D nor the G7 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The 100D was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 15 percent) than the G7, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Canon 100D vs Panasonic G7
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 100D features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic G7 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the G7 is 32 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.0. The sensor in the 100D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G7 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 17.9MP, the 100D offers a higher resolution than the G7 (15.8MP), but the 100D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 3.77μm for the G7) due to its larger sensor. However, the G7 is a somewhat more recent model (by 2 years and 1 month) than the 100D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the G7 provides a better video resolution than the 100D. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.
Feature comparison: Canon 100D vs Panasonic G7
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the G7 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the 100D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. Both the 100D and the G7 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 100D was replaced by the Canon 200D, while the G7 was followed by the Panasonic G85.

So what is the bottom line? Is the Canon 100D better than the Panasonic G7 or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS 100D:
- More detail: Offers more megapixels (17.9 vs 15.8MP) with a 8% higher linear resolution.
- Better low-light imaging: Features bigger pixels on a larger sensor for better high-ISO images.
- Brighter framing: Features an optical viewfinder for clear, lag-free composition.
- More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced segment (15 percent cheaper at launch).

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the G7 comes out slightly ahead of the 100D (6 : 5 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the 100D or the G7 handle or perform in practice.
