Canon 1000D vs Kodak S-1
The Canon EOS 1000D (called Canon XS in some regions) and the Kodak PIXPRO S-1 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in June 2008 and January 2012. The 1000D is a DSLR, while the S-1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (1000D) and a Four Thirds (S-1) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 10.1 megapixels, whereas the Kodak provides 16.1 MP.

Moreover, the S-1 is substantially lighter (42 percent) than the 1000D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 1000D nor the S-1 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The S-1 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 33 percent) than the 1000D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1000D features an APS-C sensor and the Kodak S-1 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the S-1 is 32 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.0. The sensor in the 1000D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the S-1 offers a 4:3 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the S-1 offers a higher resolution of 16.1 megapixels, compared with 10.1 MP of the 1000D. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.74μm versus 5.71μm for the 1000D). However, it should be noted that the S-1 is much more recent (by 3 years and 7 months) than the 1000D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.
The resolution advantage of the Kodak S-1 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the S-1 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 23.2 x 17.4 inch or 58.9 x 44.2 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 18.6 x 13.9 inch or 47.1 x 35.4 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 15.5 x 11.6 inch or 39.3 x 29.5 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 1000D are 19.4 x 13 inch or 49.4 x 32.9 cm for good quality, 15.6 x 10.4 inch or 39.5 x 26.3 cm for very good quality, and 13 x 8.6 inch or 32.9 x 21.9 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon EOS 1000D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 800, which can be extended to ISO 100-1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Kodak PIXPRO S-1 are ISO 200 to ISO 12800 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The S-1 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 1000D does not. The highest resolution format that the S-1 can use is 1080/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The 1000D has one, while the S-1 does not. While the built-in flash of the 1000D is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.The S-1 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. It is notable that the S-1 offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the 1000D does not offer wifi capability.
The S-1 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Kodak. In contrast, the 1000D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 1000D was succeeded by the Canon 1100D.
