Pentax Q versus Pentax K-70

The Pentax Q and the Pentax K-70 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in June 2011 and June 2016. The Pentax Q is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the K-70 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a 1/2.3-inch (Pentax Q) and an APS-C (K-70) sensor. The Pentax Q has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the K-70 provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Pentax K-70 is considerably larger (110 percent) than the Pentax Q. Moreover, the K-70 is substantially heavier (282 percent) than the Pentax Q. It is noteworthy in this context that the K-70 is splash and dust-proof, while the Pentax Q does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Pentax Q vs Pentax K-70

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Pentax Q features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Pentax K-70 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the K-70 is 1211 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.5. The sensor in the Pentax Q has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the K-70 offers a 3:2 aspect.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Pentax Q and Pentax K-70 sensor measures

With 24MP, the K-70 offers a higher resolution than the Pentax Q (12MP), but the K-70 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.91μm versus 1.53μm for the Pentax Q) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the K-70 is a much more recent model (by 4 years and 11 months) than the Pentax Q, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the K-70 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Unlike the Pentax Q, the K-70 has the capacity to capture high quality composite images by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).

This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the K-70 provides a faster frame rate than the Pentax Q. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60i, while the Pentax Q is limited to 1080/30p.

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the K-70 has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. The K-70 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the Pentax Q has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the Pentax Q was succeeded by the Pentax Q10.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is the Pentax Q better than the Pentax K-70 or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Reasons to prefer the Pentax Q:

  • Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images.
  • More framing options: Can be equipped with a hotshoe-mounted accessory-viewfinder.
  • More compact: Is smaller (98x57mm vs 126x93mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.

  • Easier framing: Has an optical viewfinder for image framing and settings control.
  • More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (921k vs 460k dots).
  • More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
  • Faster shutter: Has higher mechanical shutter speed (6000/sec vs 2000/sec) to freeze action.
  • Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (6 vs 1.5 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
  • Longer lasting: Gets more shots (410 versus 230) out of a single battery charge.
  • Better sealing: Is splash and dust sealed for shooting in inclement weather conditions.
  • More modern: Reflects 4 years and 11 months of technical progress since the Pentax Q launch.

If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the K-70 is the clear winner of the contest (13 : 6 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation.
