Panasonic GM1 versus Canon M10
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1 and the Canon EOS M10 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in October 2013 and October 2015. Both the GM1 and the M10 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a Four Thirds (GM1) and an APS-C (M10) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 15.8 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 17.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon M10 is notably larger (33 percent) than the Panasonic GM1. Moreover, the M10 is substantially heavier (48 percent) than the GM1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the GM1 nor the M10 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The M10 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 33 percent) than the GM1, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Panasonic GM1 vs Canon M10
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic GM1 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Canon M10 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the M10 is 48 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.6. The sensor in the GM1 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the M10 offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 17.9MP, the M10 offers a higher resolution than the GM1 (15.8MP), but the M10 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 3.77μm for the GM1) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the M10 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 11 months) than the GM1, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.
For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. The Overall DXO ratings for the two cameras under consideration are close, suggesting that they provide similar image quality. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the GM1 provides a higher frame rate than the M10. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60i, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The GM1 and the M10 are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. The images are, thus, framed using live view on the rear LCD. Both the GM1 and the M10 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The GM1 was replaced by the Panasonic GM5, while the M10 was followed by the Canon M100.

So what is the bottom line? Is the Panasonic GM1 better than the Canon M10 or vice versa? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Arguments in favor of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1:
- Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (1080/60i versus 1080/30p).
- More compact: Is smaller (99x55mm vs 108x67mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
- Less heavy: Is lighter (by 97g or 32 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
- More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in October 2013).
Advantages of the Canon EOS M10:
- More detail: Has more megapixels (17.9 vs 15.8MP), which boosts linear resolution by 8%.

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the M10 emerges as the winner of the match-up (6 : 4 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
