Panasonic FZ330 versus Panasonic LX100

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ330 (called Panasonic FZ300 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in July 2015 and September 2014. Both the FZ330 and the LX100 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 1/2.3-inch (FZ330) and a Four Thirds (LX100) sensor. The FZ330 has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the LX100 provides 12.7 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LX100 is considerably smaller (37 percent) than the Panasonic FZ330. Moreover, the LX100 is substantially lighter (43 percent) than the FZ330. It is worth mentioning in this context that the FZ330 is splash and dust resistant, while the LX100 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Concerning battery life, the FZ330 gets 380 shots out of its DMW-BLC12 battery, while the LX100 can take 300 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLG10 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The FZ330 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 33 percent) than the LX100, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Panasonic FZ330 vs Panasonic LX100

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic FZ330 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Panasonic LX100 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the LX100 is 704 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 2.0. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

With 12.7MP, the LX100 offers a higher resolution than the FZ330 (12MP), but the LX100 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.21μm versus 1.53μm for the FZ330) due to its larger sensor. However, the FZ330 is a somewhat more recent model (by 9 months) than the LX100, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the FZ330 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

FZ330 versus LX100 MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the LX100 offers substantially better image quality than the FZ330 (overall score 29 points higher). The advantage is based on 3 bits higher color depth, 1.5 EV in additional dynamic range, and 2.5 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Both the FZ330 and the LX100 have zoom lenses build in. The FZ330 has a 25-600mm f/2.8-2.8 optic and the LX100 offers a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the LX100 provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the FZ330, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. The LX100 offers the faster maximum aperture.
