Panasonic FZ330 versus Panasonic LX100

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ330 (called Panasonic FZ300 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in July 2015 and September 2014. Both the FZ330 and the LX100 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 1/2.3-inch (FZ330) and a Four Thirds (LX100) sensor. The FZ330 has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the LX100 provides 12.7 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LX100 is considerably smaller (37 percent) than the Panasonic FZ330. Moreover, the LX100 is substantially lighter (43 percent) than the FZ330. It is worth mentioning in this context that the FZ330 is splash and dust resistant, while the LX100 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Concerning battery life, the FZ330 gets 380 shots out of its DMW-BLC12 battery, while the LX100 can take 300 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLG10 power pack.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The FZ330 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 33 percent) than the LX100, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Panasonic FZ330 vs Panasonic LX100

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic FZ330 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Panasonic LX100 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the LX100 is 704 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 2.0. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3. The LX100 has the particularity of featuring a switch that allows to toggle between different aspect ratios, while maintaining the same field of view and full image resolution.

Panasonic FZ330 and Panasonic LX100 sensor measures

With 12.7MP, the LX100 offers a higher resolution than the FZ330 (12MP), but the LX100 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.21μm versus 1.53μm for the FZ330) due to its larger sensor. However, the FZ330 is a somewhat more recent model (by 9 months) than the LX100, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the FZ330 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

FZ330 versus LX100 MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the LX100 offers substantially better image quality than the FZ330 (overall score 29 points higher). The advantage is based on 3 bits higher color depth, 1.5 EV in additional dynamic range, and 2.5 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (4K/30p).

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The two cameras under review are similar with respect to both having an electronic viewfinder. However, the one in the LX100 offers a substantially higher resolution than the one in the FZ330 (2764k vs 1440k dots). One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The FZ330 has one, while the LX100 does not. While the build-in flash of the FZ330 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, both cameras feature an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the FZ330 and the LX100 have zoom lenses build in. The FZ330 has a 25-600mm f/2.8-2.8 optic and the LX100 offers a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the LX100 provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the FZ330, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. The LX100 offers the faster maximum aperture.

Both the FZ330 and the LX100 write their imaging data to SDXC cards.

Both the FZ330 and the LX100 are recent models that feature in their makers' current product line-up. The FZ330 replaced the earlier Panasonic FZ200, while the LX100 does not have a direct predecessor.

  • Flexible image proportions: Has a multi-aspect sensor that allows for alternative image shapes.
  • More detailed viewfinder: Has higher resolution electronic viewfinder (2764k vs 1440k dots).
  • Better light gathering: Has a lens with a wider maximum aperture (f/1.7 vs f/2.8).
  • Wider view: Has a wider-angle lens that facilitates landscape or interior shots.
  • More compact: Is smaller (115x66mm vs 132x92mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 298g or 43 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
  • Easier device pairing: Supports NFC for fast wireless image transfer over short distances.

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the LX100 emerges as the winner of the match-up (13 : 11 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
