The OM System Tough TG-7 and the Sony ZV-E1 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2023 and March 2023. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony ZV-E1 is notably larger (16 percent) than the OM System TG-7. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The TG-7 was launched at a lower price than the ZV-E1, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the OM System TG-7 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Sony ZV-E1 a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the ZV-E1 is 2925 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.0. The sensor in the TG-7 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the ZV-E1 offers a 3:2 aspect.

OM System TG-7 and Sony ZV-E1 sensor measures

Even though the ZV-E1 has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 12 megapixels. This implies that the ZV-E1 has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 8.40μm versus 1.53μm for the TG-7), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the TG-7 is a somewhat more recent model (by 5 months) than the ZV-E1, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.

The ZV-E1 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.

The OM System Tough TG-7 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Sony ZV-E1 are ISO 80 to ISO 102400, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 40-409600.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with BSI-CMOS (Backside Illuminated Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the ZV-E1 provides a faster frame rate than the TG-7. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The TG-7 has one, while the ZV-E1 does not. While the built-in flash of the TG-7 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The ZV-E1 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the TG-7 does not have a selfie-screen.

The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the ZV-E1 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the TG-7 and the ZV-E1 write their files to SDXC cards. The ZV-E1 supports UHS-II cards (Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 312 MB/s), while the TG-7 can use UHS-I cards (up to 104 MB/s).
