Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The ZS200 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 20 percent) than the P1000, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Nikon P1000 vs Panasonic ZS200
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon P1000 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Panasonic ZS200 an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the ZS200 is 314 percent bigger. The sensor in the P1000 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the ZS200 offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 20MP, the ZS200 offers a higher resolution than the P1000 (15.9MP), but the ZS200 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 1.33μm for the P1000) due to its larger sensor. However, the P1000 is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 months) than the ZS200, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The ZS200 has a touchscreen, while the P1000 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.The P1000 has an articulated LCD that can be turned to be front-facing. The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the ZS200 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible.
