The Nikon D750 and the Canon EOS 2000D (labelled Canon T7 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2014 and February 2018. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 2000D is notably smaller (18 percent) than the Nikon D750. Moreover, the 2000D is substantially lighter (37 percent) than the D750. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 2000D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 80 percent) than the D750, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Nikon D750 vs Canon 2000D

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon D750 features a full frame sensor and the Canon 2000D an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the 2000D is 61 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

Nikon D750 and Canon 2000D sensor measures

With 24.2MP, the D750 offers a slightly higher resolution than the 2000D (24MP), but the D750 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.97μm versus 3.72μm for the 2000D) due to its larger sensor. However, the 2000D is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 years and 5 months) than the D750, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

The Nikon D750 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 50-51200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS 2000D are ISO 100 to ISO 6400, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-12800..

D750 versus 2000D MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under review, the D750 provides substantially higher image quality than the 2000D, with an overall score that is 22 points higher. This advantage is based on 2.2 bits higher color depth, 2.6 EV in additional dynamic range, and 1.6 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the D750 provides a higher frame rate than the 2000D. One feature that is present on the D750, but is missing on the 2000D is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the D750 and the 2000D write their files to SDXC cards. The D750 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the 2000D only has one slot.

It is notable that the D750 has a microphone port, which is missing on the 2000D. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Nikon D750 (unlike the 2000D) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
