Leica X Vario versus Leica Q Typ 116

The Leica X Vario (Typ 107) and the Leica Q (Typ 116) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in June 2013 and June 2015. Both the X Vario and the Q Typ 116 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (X Vario) and a full frame (Q Typ 116) sensor. The X Vario has a resolution of 16.1 megapixel, whereas the Q Typ 116 provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica Q Typ 116 is notably larger (7 percent) than the Leica X Vario. The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The X Vario was launched at a markedly lower price (by 33 percent) than the Q Typ 116, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Leica X Vario vs Leica Q Typ 116

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica X Vario features an APS-C sensor and the Leica Q Typ 116 a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the Q Typ 116 is 133 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

With 24MP, the Q Typ 116 offers a higher resolution than the X Vario (16.1MP), but the Q Typ 116 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.00μm versus 4.80μm for the X Vario) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the Q Typ 116 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 11 months) than the X Vario, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under consideration, the Q Typ 116 has a markedly higher DXO score than the X Vario (overall score 7 points higher), which will translate into better image quality. The advantage is based on 0.9 bits higher color depth, and 0.8 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the Q Typ 116 provides a faster frame rate than the X Vario. The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the Q Typ 116 features an electronic shutter, which makes silent shooting and higher burst speeds possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The X Vario is equipped with a zoom lens, while the Q Typ 116 comes with a build-in prime. The X Vario has a 28-70mm f/3.5-6.4 optic and the Q Typ 116 offers a 28mm f/1.7 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the X Vario and Q Typ 116 provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the Q Typ 116 has less tele-photo reach at the long end. The Q Typ 116 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
