Leica X Typ 113 versus Panasonic LX100
The Leica X (Typ 113) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced in September 2014. Both the X Typ 113 and the LX100 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (X Typ 113) and a Four Thirds (LX100) sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 16.1 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 12.7 MP. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The LX100 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 61 percent) than the X Typ 113, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Leica X Typ 113 vs Panasonic LX100
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. With 16.1MP, the X Typ 113 offers a higher resolution than the LX100 (12.7MP), but the X Typ 113 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.79μm versus 4.21μm for the LX100) due to its larger sensor. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the LX100 provides a better video resolution than the X Typ 113. The LX100 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X Typ 113 comes with a build-in prime. The LX100 has a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 optic and the X Typ 113 offers a 35mm f/1.7 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms).
