Leica X Typ 113 versus Fujifilm X100S

The Leica X (Typ 113) and the Fujifilm X100S are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2014 and January 2013. Both the X Typ 113 and the X100S are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 16.1 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 16 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100S is somewhat smaller (3 percent) than the Leica X Typ 113. Moreover, the X100S is slightly lighter (8 percent) than the X Typ 113. Cameras that are intended for semi-professional or professional use are sometimes a bit bulkier in order to provide them with the necessary ruggedness. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X Typ 113 nor the X100S are weather-sealed.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X100S was launched at a markedly lower price (by 43 percent) than the X Typ 113, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the X100S is 1 percent smaller. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 16.1MP, the X Typ 113 offers a higher resolution than the X100S (16MP), but the X Typ 113 has marginally smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.81μm versus 4.82μm for the X100S). However, the X Typ 113 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 8 months) than the X100S, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100S has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the X100S provides a faster frame rate than the X Typ 113. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the Leica is limited to 1080/30p.

Feature comparison

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the X100S has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. Both the X Typ 113 and the X100S have build-in prime lenses. The X Typ 113 has a 35mm f/1.7 optic and the X100S offers a 35mm f/2.0 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the X Typ 113 and the X100S provide the same angle of view. The X Typ 113 offers the faster maximum aperture.

Both the X Typ 113 and the X100S have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The X100S was replaced by the Fujifilm X100T, while the X Typ 113 does not have a direct successor.
