Leica M8 versus Fujifilm XP130

The Leica M8 and the Fujifilm FinePix XP130 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2006 and January 2018. The M8 is a rangefinder-style mirrorless camera, while the XP130 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-H (M8) and a 1/2.3-inch (XP130) sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 10.4 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 15.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm XP130 is notably smaller (30 percent) than the Leica M8. More than that, the XP130 is water-proof up to 20m and can, thus, be used for underwater photography.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the XP130 has a lens build in, whereas the M8 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The XP130 was launched at a lower price than the M8, despite having a lens build in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Leica M8 vs Fujifilm XP130

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica M8 features an APS-H sensor and the Fujifilm XP130 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the XP130 is 94 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.3 and 5.6. The sensor in the M8 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the XP130 offers a 4:3 aspect.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the XP130 offers a higher resolution of 15.9 megapixel, compared with 10.4 MP of the M8. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.33μm versus 6.84μm for the M8). However, it should be noted that the XP130 is much more recent (by 11 years and 4 months) than the M8, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

M8 versus XP130 MP

This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The XP130 indeed provides for movie recording, while the M8 does not. The highest resolution format that the XP130 can use is 1080/60p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The XP130 has one, while the M8 does not. While the build-in flash of the XP130 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The XP130 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the M8 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the M8 was succeeded by the Leica M9.

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the XP130 is the clear winner of the contest (15 : 6 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
