Leica Digilux 3 versus Fujifilm X100F
The Leica Digilux 3 and the Fujifilm X100F are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2006 and January 2017. The Digilux 3 is a DSLR, while the X100F is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a Four Thirds (Digilux 3) and an APS-C sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 7.4 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 24 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100F is notably smaller (25 percent) than the Leica Digilux 3. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the Digilux 3 nor the X100F are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X100F has a lens build in, whereas the Digilux 3 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X100F was launched at a lower price than the Digilux 3, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica Digilux 3 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Fujifilm X100F an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X100F is 64 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.5. The sensor in the Digilux 3 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the X100F offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 24MP, the X100F offers a higher resolution than the Digilux 3 (7.4MP), but the X100F has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 5.51μm for the Digilux 3). Yet, the X100F is a much more recent model (by 10 years and 4 months) than the Digilux 3, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100F has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The X100F indeed provides for movie recording, while the Digilux 3 does not. The highest resolution format that the X100F can use is 1080/60p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the X100F has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the Digilux 3 has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The X100F is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the Digilux 3 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the Digilux 3 from Leica.
So how do things add up? Which of the two cameras – the Leica Digilux 3 or the Fujifilm X100F – has the upper hand? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.
Arguments in favor of the Leica Digilux 3:

- Ready to shoot: Comes with an integrated lens, while the Digilux 3 requires a separate lens.

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the X100F is the clear winner of the contest (13 : 6 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features.
In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the Digilux 3 or the X100F. At times, user reviews, such as those published at amazon, address these issues in a useful manner, but such feedback is on many occasions incomplete, inconsistent, and unreliable.
