Leica D-LUX Typ 109 versus Sony RX100 V
The Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2014 and October 2016. Both the D-LUX Typ 109 and the RX100 V are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a Four Thirds (D-LUX Typ 109) and an one-inch (RX100 V) sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 12.7 megapixel, whereas the Sony provides 20 MP. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The RX100 V was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 16 percent) than the D-LUX Typ 109, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Leica D-LUX Typ 109 vs Sony RX100 V
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica D-LUX Typ 109 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Sony RX100 V an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the RX100 V is 48 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 2.7. The sensor in the D-LUX Typ 109 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the RX100 V offers a 3:2 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the RX100 V offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 12.7 MP of the D-LUX Typ 109. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 4.21μm for the D-LUX Typ 109). However, it should be noted that the RX100 V is much more recent (by 2 years) than the D-LUX Typ 109, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.

Both the D-LUX Typ 109 and the RX100 V have zoom lenses build in. The D-LUX Typ 109 has a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 optic and the RX100 V offers a 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Leica and Sony provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the Sony has less tele-photo reach at the long end. The D-LUX Typ 109 offers the faster maximum aperture.

However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
