Leica D-LUX Typ 109 versus Sony RX100 IV

The Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 IV are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2014 and June 2015. Both the D-LUX Typ 109 and the RX100 IV are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a Four Thirds (D-LUX Typ 109) and an one-inch sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 12.7 megapixel, whereas the Sony provides 20 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony RX100 IV is notably smaller (24 percent) than the Leica D-LUX Typ 109. Moreover, the RX100 IV is markedly lighter (26 percent) than the D-LUX Typ 109. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the D-LUX Typ 109 nor the RX100 IV are weather-sealed.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The RX100 IV was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 16 percent) than the D-LUX Typ 109, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica D-LUX Typ 109 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Sony RX100 IV an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the RX100 IV is 48 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 2.7. The sensor in the D-LUX Typ 109 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the RX100 IV offers a 3:2 aspect.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the RX100 IV offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 12.7 MP of the D-LUX Typ 109. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 4.21μm for the D-LUX Typ 109). However, it should be noted that the RX100 IV is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 months) than the D-LUX Typ 109, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (4K/30p).

Both the D-LUX Typ 109 and the RX100 IV have zoom lenses build in. The D-LUX Typ 109 has a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 optic and the RX100 IV offers a 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Leica and Sony provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the Sony has less tele-photo reach at the long end. The D-LUX Typ 109 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The D-LUX Typ 109 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the RX100 IV has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the RX100 IV was succeeded by the Sony RX100 V.
