Fujifilm X100F versus Fujifilm X100S

The Fujifilm X100F and the Fujifilm X100S are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2017 and January 2013. Both the X100F and the X100S are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X100F has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the X100S provides 16 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100S is somewhat smaller (1 percent) than the Fujifilm X100F. Moreover, the X100S is markedly lighter (5 percent) than the X100F. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X100F nor the X100S are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the X100F gets 390 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the X100S can take 330 images on a single charge of its NP-95 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X100F vs Fujifilm X100S

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the X100F offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 16 MP of the X100S. This megapixel advantage translates into a 23 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the X100F has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 4.80μm for the X100S). In this context, it should be noted, however, that the X100F is much more recent (by 4 years) than the X100S, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that compensate for the smaller pixel size. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/60p).

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The X100F and the X100S are similar in the sense that both feature an electronic viewfinder, which is helpful when framing images in bright sunlight. Both the X100F and the X100S have build-in prime lenses. Both optics have identical focal length and aperture specifications (23mm f/2.0). Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.

The X100F is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X100S has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X100S was succeeded by the Fujifilm X100T.

So how do things add up? Is there a clear favorite between the Fujifilm X100F and the Fujifilm X100S? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Arguments in favor of the Fujifilm X100F:

  • More detail: Offers more megapixels (24 vs 16MP) with a 23% higher linear resolution.
  • Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (3.0" vs 2.8") for image review and settings control.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
