Fujifilm X100 vs Olympus TG-5
The Fujifilm FinePix X100 and the Olympus Tough TG-5 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2010 and May 2017. Both the X100 and the TG-5 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (X100) and a 1/2.3-inch (TG-5) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 12.2 megapixels, whereas the Olympus provides 12 MP.

The TG-5 can be obtained in two different colors (black, red), while the X100 is only available in black.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus TG-5 is notably smaller (21 percent) than the Fujifilm X100. Moreover, the TG-5 is substantially lighter (44 percent) than the X100. It is noteworthy in this context that the TG-5 is splash and dust-proof, while the X100 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing. More than that, the TG-5 is water-proof up to 15m and can, thus, be used for underwater photography.
Concerning battery life, the X100 gets 300 shots out of its NP-95 battery, while the TG-5 can take 340 images on a single charge of its LI-92B power pack. The power pack in the TG-5 can be charged via the USB port, which can be very convenient when travelling.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The TG-5 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 63 percent) than the X100, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X100 features an APS-C sensor and the Olympus TG-5 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the TG-5 is 92 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 5.6. The sensor in the X100 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the TG-5 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 12.2MP, the X100 offers a slightly higher resolution than the TG-5 (12MP), but the X100 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.53μm versus 1.53μm for the TG-5) due to its larger sensor. However, the TG-5 is a much more recent model (by 6 years and 7 months) than the X100, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.
The Fujifilm FinePix X100 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Olympus Tough TG-5 are ISO 100 to ISO 12800 (no boost).
In terms of underlying technology, the X100 is build around a CMOS sensor, while the TG-5 uses a BSI-CMOS imager. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the TG-5 provides a better video resolution than the X100. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 720/30p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The Olympus TG-5 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The TG-5 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X100 comes with a built-in prime. The TG-5 has a 25-100mm f/2.0-4.9 optic and the X100 offers a 35mm f/2.0 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Olympus provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the Fujifilm. Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.
Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the X100 and the TG-5 write their files to SDXC cards. The TG-5 supports UHS-I cards (Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s), while the X100 cannot take advantage of Ultra High Speed SD cards.

It is notable that the X100 has a hotshoe, while the TG-5 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.
Travel and landscape photographers will find it useful that the TG-5 has an internal geolocalization sensor and can record GPS coordinates in its EXIF data.
Both the X100 and the TG-5 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The X100 was replaced by the Fujifilm X100S, while the TG-5 was followed by the Olympus TG-6. - More modern: Reflects 6 years and 7 months of technical progress since the X100 launch.
If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the TG-5 is the clear winner of the contest (17 : 8 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision. A professional wedding photographer will view the differences between cameras in a way that diverges from the perspective of a travel photog, and a person interested in cityscapes has distinct needs from a macro shooter.
