Fujifilm X10 vs Canon 1D Mark II
The Fujifilm X10 and the Canon EOS-1D Mark II are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2011 and January 2004. The X10 is a fixed lens compact, while the 1D Mark II is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a 2/3 (X10) and an APS-H (1D Mark II) sensor. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X10 was launched at a lower price than the 1D Mark II, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
Sensor comparison
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X10 features a 2/3 sensor and the Canon 1D Mark II an APS-H sensor. The sensor area in the 1D Mark II is 845 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 3.9 and 1.3. The sensor in the X10 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the 1D Mark II offers a 3:2 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the Fujifilm X10 offers a higher resolution of 12 megapixels, compared with 8.2 MP of the Canon 1D Mark II. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.20μm versus 8.17μm for the 1D Mark II). However, it should be noted that the X10 is much more recent (by 7 years and 7 months) than the 1D Mark II, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X10 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm X10 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X10 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 20 x 15 inches or 50.8 x 38.1 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 16 x 12 inches or 40.6 x 30.5 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 13.3 x 10 inches or 33.9 x 25.4 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 1D Mark II are 17.5 x 11.7 inches or 44.5 x 29.7 cm for good quality, 14 x 9.3 inches or 35.6 x 23.7 cm for very good quality, and 11.7 x 7.8 inches or 29.7 x 19.8 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Fujifilm X10 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200, which can be extended to ISO 100-12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS-1D Mark II are ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-3200.
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The X10 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the 1D Mark II does not. The highest resolution format that the X10 can use is 1080/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X10 has one, while the 1D Mark II does not. While the built-in flash of the X10 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The X10 writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the 1D Mark II uses Compact Flash or SD cards. The 1D Mark II features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the X10 only has one slot.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D Mark II (unlike the X10) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
