Fujifilm X-H2 vs Olympus E-3
The Fujifilm X-H2 and the Olympus E-3 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2022 and October 2007. The X-H2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the E-3 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on an APS-C (X-H2) and a Four Thirds (E-3) sensor. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The E-3 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 15 percent) than the X-H2, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
Sensor comparison
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-H2 features an APS-C sensor and the Olympus E-3 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-3 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-H2 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the E-3 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 39.8MP, the X-H2 offers a higher resolution than the E-3 (10MP), but the X-H2 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.04μm versus 4.74μm for the E-3). However, the X-H2 is a much more recent model (by 14 years and 10 months) than the E-3, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-H2 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm X-H2 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X-H2 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 38.6 x 25.8 inches or 98.1 x 65.4 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 30.9 x 20.6 inches or 78.5 x 52.3 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 25.8 x 17.2 inches or 65.4 x 43.6 cm. The corresponding values for the Olympus E-3 are 18.2 x 13.7 inches or 46.3 x 34.7 cm for good quality, 14.6 x 10.9 inches or 37.1 x 27.8 cm for very good quality, and 12.2 x 9.1 inches or 30.9 x 23.2 cm for excellent quality prints.
The X-H2 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
Unlike the E-3, the X-H2 has the capacity to capture high quality composite images (160MP) by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).
The Fujifilm X-H2 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 160 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 80-51200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Olympus E-3 are ISO 100 to ISO 3200 (no boost).
In terms of underlying technology, the X-H2 is build around a BSI-CMOS sensor, while the E-3 uses a CMOS imager. The X-H2 uses Fujifilm's X-Trans layout of photosites, while the E-3 employs the more common Bayer array.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The X-H2 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the E-3 does not. The highest resolution format that the X-H2 can use is 8k/30p.
Feature comparison
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the X-H2 has an electronic viewfinder (5760k dots), while the E-3 has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The viewfinders of both cameras offer the same field of view (100%), but the viewfinder of the X-H2 has a higher magnification than the one of the E-3 (0.8x vs 0.58x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye. One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The X-H2 has a touchscreen, while the E-3 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

It is notable that the X-H2 offers wifi support, while the E-3 does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.
