Fujifilm GFX 50S versus Sony A7R

The Fujifilm GFX 50S and the Sony Alpha A7R are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2016 and October 2013. Both the GFX 50S and the A7R are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a medium format (GFX 50S) and a full frame (A7R) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 51.1 megapixel, whereas the Sony provides 36.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony A7R is notably smaller (14 percent) than the Fujifilm GFX 50S. Moreover, the A7R is substantially lighter (37 percent) than the GFX 50S. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The A7R was launched at a markedly lower price (by 65 percent) than the GFX 50S, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm GFX 50S vs Sony A7R

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm GFX 50S features a medium format sensor and the Sony A7R a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the A7R is 41 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 1.0. The sensor in the GFX 50S has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the A7R offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 51.1MP, the GFX 50S offers a higher resolution than the A7R (36.2MP), but the GFX 50S nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.33μm versus 4.88μm for the A7R) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the GFX 50S is a somewhat more recent model (by 2 years and 11 months) than the A7R, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the A7R provides a faster frame rate than the GFX 50S. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the A7R has an electronic viewfinder (2400k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the GFX 50S relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. One feature that is present on the GFX 50S, but is missing on the A7R is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the GFX 50S features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The GFX 50S writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the A7R uses SDXC or Memory Stick PRO Duo cards. The GFX 50S features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the A7R only has one slot.
