Canon XSi vs Fujifilm XP140
The Canon EOS Rebel XSi (called Canon 450D in some regions) and the Fujifilm FinePix XP140 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2008 and February 2019. The XSi is a DSLR, while the XP140 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (XSi) and a 1/2.3-inch (XP140) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 12.2 megapixels, whereas the Fujifilm provides 15.9 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm XP140 is considerably smaller (38 percent) than the Canon XSi. It is noteworthy in this context that the XP140 is splash and dust-proof, while the XSi does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing. More than that, the XP140 is water-proof up to 25m and can, thus, be used for underwater photography.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the XP140 has a lens built in, whereas the XSi is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the XSi gets 500 shots out of its LP-E5 battery, while the XP140 can take 240 images on a single charge of its NP-45S power pack. The power pack in the XP140 can be charged via the USB port, which can be very convenient when travelling.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The XP140 was launched at a lower price than the XSi, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon XSi features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm XP140 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the XP140 is 91 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 5.6. The sensor in the XSi has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the XP140 offers a 4:3 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the XP140 offers a higher resolution of 15.9 megapixels, compared with 12.2 MP of the XSi. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.33μm versus 5.19μm for the XSi). However, it should be noted that the XP140 is much more recent (by 11 years) than the XSi, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the XP140 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm XP140 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the XP140 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 23 x 17.3 inches or 58.5 x 43.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 18.4 x 13.8 inches or 46.8 x 35.1 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 15.4 x 11.5 inches or 39 x 29.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon XSi are 21.4 x 14.2 inches or 54.3 x 36.2 cm for good quality, 17.1 x 11.4 inches or 43.4 x 28.9 cm for very good quality, and 14.2 x 9.5 inches or 36.2 x 24.1 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon EOS Rebel XSi has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm FinePix XP140 are ISO 100 to ISO 12800 (no boost).
In terms of underlying technology, the XSi is build around a CMOS sensor, while the XP140 uses a BSI-CMOS imager. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The XP140 indeed provides for movie recording, while the XSi does not. The highest resolution format that the XP140 can use is 4K/15p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the XSi has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the XP140 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. The Fujifilm XP140 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The XSi writes its imaging data to SDHC cards, while the XP140 uses SDXC cards.

It is notable that the XSi has a hotshoe, while the XP140 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.
The XP140 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the XSi has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the XSi was succeeded by the Canon T1i.
