Canon T7 versus Canon G1 X Mark II

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 (called Canon 2000D in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2018 and February 2014. The T7 is a DSLR, while the G1X Mark II is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (T7) and an 1.5-inch (G1X Mark II) sensor. The T7 has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the G1X Mark II provides 13 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G1 X Mark II is considerably smaller (34 percent) than the Canon T7. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the T7 nor the G1X Mark II are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G1X Mark II has a lens build in, whereas the T7 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the T7 gets 500 shots out of its LP-E10 battery, while the G1X Mark II can take 240 images on a single charge of its NB-12L power pack.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon T7 vs Canon G1 X Mark II

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon T7 features an APS-C sensor and the Canon G1 X Mark II an 1.5-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G1X Mark II is 21 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.85. The sensor in the T7 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G1X Mark II offers a 4:3 aspect.

Technology-wise, the G1X Mark II uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 6) than the T7 (DIGIC 4+), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

With 24MP, the T7 offers a higher resolution than the G1X Mark II (13MP), but the T7 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.49μm for the G1X Mark II). However, the T7 is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 years) than the G1X Mark II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/30p).

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The G1X Mark II has a touchscreen, while the T7 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
