Canon SX430 vs T100

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon T100 is considerably larger (83 percent) than the Canon SX430. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the SX430 nor the T100 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the SX430 has a lens built in, whereas the T100 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The SX430 was launched at a lower price than the T100, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon SX430 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Canon T100 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the T100 is 1086 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.6. The sensor in the SX430 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the T100 offers a 3:2 aspect.

Canon SX430 and Canon T100 sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon SX430 offers a higher resolution of 19.9 megapixels, compared with 17.9 MP of the Canon T100. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.19μm versus 4.31μm for the T100). Moreover, it should be noted that the T100 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 1 month) than the SX430, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the SX430 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The Canon PowerShot SX430 IS has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS Rebel T100 are ISO 100 to ISO 6400, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-12800.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the T100 provides a better video resolution than the SX430. It is notable that the T100 has a hotshoe, which makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun. The SX430 does not feature such an accessory-socket.
