Canon SL2 versus Canon T6s

The Canon EOS Rebel SL2 (called Canon 200D in some regions) and the Canon EOS Rebel T6s (labelled Canon 760D in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in June 2017 and February 2015. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 24 megapixel. Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their size, their sensors, their features, and their reception by expert reviewers.

Body comparison: Canon SL2 vs Canon T6s

The side-by-side display below illustrates the physical size and weight of the Canon SL2 and the Canon T6s. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are available. All width, height and depth measures are rounded to the nearest millimeter. You can also use the toggle button to switch to a percentage comparison if you prefer that the measures are being expressed in relative terms (in this case, the camera on the left – the SL2 – represents 100 percent across all the size and weight measures).

Compare SL2 and T6s rear

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon T6s is notably larger (18 percent) than the Canon SL2. Moreover, the T6s is markedly heavier (25 percent) than the SL2. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the SL2 nor the T6s are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. In this particular case, both cameras feature the same lens mount, so that they can use the same lenses. You can find an overview of suitable optics in the Canon EF Lens Catalog.

The table below summarizes the key physical specs of the two cameras alongside a broader set of comparators. In case you want to display and compare another camera duo, just click on the right or left arrow next to the camera that you would like to inspect. Alternatively, you can also use the CAM-parator to select your camera combination among a larger number of options.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The SL2 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 35 percent) than the T6s, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Canon SL2 vs Canon T6s

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.6. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of chip-set technology, the SL2 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 7) than the T6s (DIGIC 6), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon SL2 and Canon T6s sensor measures

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 24 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the SL2 and the T6s have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the SL2 is much more recent (by 2 years and 4 months) than the T6s, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time.

SL2 versus T6s MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under review, the SL2 has a notably higher overall DXO score than the T6s (overall score 9 points higher), which gives it an advantage in terms of imaging quality. This advantage is based on 1 bits higher color depth, 1.4 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. The table below summarizes the physical sensor characteristics and sensor quality findings and compares them across a set of similar cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the SL2 provides a higher frame rate than the T6s. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the T6s is limited to 1080/30p.

Feature comparison: Canon SL2 vs Canon T6s

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The SL2 and the T6s are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. The following table reports on some other key feature differences and similarities of the Canon SL2, the Canon T6s, and comparable cameras. One feature that is present on the T6s, but is missing on the SL2 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

Both the SL2 and the T6s write their imaging data to SDXC cards.

The SL2 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the T6s has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the T6s was succeeded by the Canon 77D.

Review summary: Canon SL2 vs Canon T6s

So how do things add up? Which of the two cameras – the Canon SL2 or the Canon T6s – has the upper hand? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.

Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS Rebel SL2:

  • Better image quality: Scores markedly higher (9 points) in the DXO overall assessment.
  • More dynamic range: Captures a larger spectrum of light and dark details (1.4 EV of extra DR).
  • Better jpgs: Has a more modern image processing engine (DIGIC 7 vs DIGIC 6).
  • Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (1080/60p versus 1080/30p).
  • More compact: Is smaller (122x93mm vs 132x101mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
  • Less heavy: Is lighter (by 112g or 20 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (650 versus 440) on a single battery charge.
  • Easier wireless transfer: Supports Bluetooth for image sharing without cables.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (35 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More modern: Reflects 2 years and 4 months of technical progress since the T6s launch.

Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS Rebel T6s:

  • Easier setting verification: Features a control panel on top to check shooting parameters.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in February 2015).

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the SL2 is the clear winner of the match-up (10 : 2 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.

SL2 10:02 T6s

In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the SL2 or the T6s handle or perform in practice. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is why expert reviews are important. The following table reports the overall rankings of the cameras as published by some of the major camera review sites (cameralabs, dpreview, ephotozine, imaging-resource, photographyblog). Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
