Canon G16 versus Canon G9 X Mark II
The Canon PowerShot G16 and the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in August 2013 and January 2017. Both the G16 and the G9X Mark II are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 1/1.7-inch (G16) and an one-inch (G9X Mark II) sensor. The G16 has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the G9X Mark II provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G9 X Mark II is considerably smaller (31 percent) than the Canon G16. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G9X Mark II was somewhat cheaper (by 4 percent) than the G16 at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Canon G16 vs Canon G9 X Mark II
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G16 features a 1/1.7-inch sensor and the Canon G9 X Mark II an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G9X Mark II is 176 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 4.65 and 2.7. The sensor in the G16 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the G9X Mark II offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 20MP, the G9X Mark II offers a higher resolution than the G16 (12MP), but the G9X Mark II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 1.87μm for the G16) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the G9X Mark II is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 4 months) than the G16, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.
Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under consideration, the G9X Mark II offers substantially better image quality than the G16 (overall score 11 points higher). The advantage is based on 0.9 bits higher color depth, 0.8 EV in additional dynamic range, and 1.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/60p).

Both the G16 and the G9X Mark II have zoom lenses build in. The G16 has a 28-140mm f/1.8-2.8 optic and the G9X Mark II offers a 28-84mm f/2.0-4.9 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the G16 and G9X Mark II provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the G9X Mark II has less tele-photo reach at the long end. The G16 offers the faster maximum aperture.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon G16 and the Canon G9 X Mark II? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Arguments in favor of the Canon PowerShot G16:
