Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The X10 was launched at a lower price than the 450D, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 450D features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm X10 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the X10 is 82 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 3.9. The sensor in the 450D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the X10 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 12.2MP, the 450D offers a slightly higher resolution than the X10 (12MP), but the 450D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.19μm versus 2.20μm for the X10) due to its larger sensor. However, the X10 is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 7 months) than the 450D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X10 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The Canon EOS 450D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm X10 are ISO 100 to ISO 3200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-12800.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the 450D provides substantially higher image quality than the X10, with an overall score that is 11 points higher. This advantage is based on 1.4 bits higher color depth, 0.5 EV of lower dynamic range, and 1.5 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X10 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 450D does not. The highest resolution format that the X10 can use is 1080/30p.

Both the 450D and the X10 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The 450D was replaced by the Canon 500D, while the X10 was followed by the Fujifilm X20.
