Canon 4000D versus Canon 400D

The Canon EOS 4000D and the Canon EOS 400D (labelled Canon XTi in some countries) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2018 and August 2006. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The 4000D has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the 400D provides 10.1 MP. Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their size, their sensors, their features, and their reception by expert reviewers.

Body comparison: Canon 4000D vs Canon 400D

The side-by-side display below illustrates the physical size and weight of the Canon 4000D and the Canon 400D. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three successive views from the front, the top, and the rear are shown. All size dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter. You can also toggle the display to switch to a percentage comparison if you prefer that the measures are being expressed in relative terms (in this case, the camera on the left – the 4000D – represents the basis or 100 percent across all the size and weight measures).

Compare 4000D and 400D rear

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 400D is notably smaller (19 percent) than the Canon 4000D. However, the 400D is markedly heavier (28 percent) than the 4000D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 4000D nor the 400D are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. In this particular case, both cameras feature the same lens mount, so that they can use the same lenses. You can find an overview of suitable optics in the Canon EF Lens Catalog.

Concerning battery life, the 4000D gets 500 shots out of its LP-E10 battery, while the 400D can take 370 images on a single charge of its NB-2LH power pack.

The following table provides a synthesis of the main physical specifications of the two cameras and other similar ones. In case you want to display and compare another camera duo, just click on the right or left arrow next to the camera that you would like to inspect. Alternatively, you can also use the CAM-parator to select your camera combination among a larger number of options.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 4000D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 50 percent) than the 400D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison: Canon 4000D vs Canon 400D

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 400D is 1 percent smaller. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of chip-set technology, the 4000D uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 4+) than the 400D (DIGIC II), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon 4000D and Canon 400D sensor measures

With 17.9MP, the 4000D offers a higher resolution than the 400D (10.1MP), but the 4000D has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 5.71μm for the 400D). However, the 4000D is a somewhat more recent model (by 11 years and 6 months) than the 400D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

4000D versus 400D MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). The Overall DXO ratings for the two cameras under consideration are close, suggesting that they provide similar image quality. The table below summarizes the physical sensor characteristics and sensor quality findings and compares them across a set of similar cameras.

The 4000D is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 400D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 400D was succeeded by the Canon 450D.

Review summary: Canon 4000D vs Canon 400D

So what is the bottom line? Is the Canon 4000D better than the Canon 400D or vice versa? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.

Advantages of the Canon EOS 4000D:

  • More detail: Offers more megapixels (17.9 vs 10.1MP) with a 33% higher linear resolution.
  • Better jpgs: Has a more modern image processing engine (DIGIC 4+ vs DIGIC II).
  • Broader imaging potential: Can record not only still images but also 1080/30p movies.
  • Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (2.7" vs 2.5") for image review and settings control.
  • Less heavy: Is lighter (by 120g or 22 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (500 versus 370) on a single battery charge.
  • Easier file upload: Has wifi build in for automatic backup or image transfer to the web.
  • Easier device pairing: Supports NFC for fast wireless image transfer over short distances.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (50 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More modern: Reflects 11 years and 6 months of technical progress since the 400D launch.

Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS 400D:

  • More compact: Is smaller (127x84mm vs 129x102mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in August 2006).

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the 4000D is the clear winner of the match-up (10 : 2 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.

4000D 10:02 400D

In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the 4000D and the 400D in practical situations. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is why expert reviews are important. The table below summarizes the assessments of some of the best known camera review sites (cameralabs, dpreview, ephotozine, imaging-resource, photographyblog). Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. Also, please note that some of the review sites have changed their methodology and reporting over time.
