Canon 30D vs Fujifilm GFX 100

The Canon EOS 30D and the Fujifilm GFX 100 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2006 and May 2019. The 30D is a DSLR, while the GFX 100 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (30D) and a medium format (GFX 100) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 8.2 megapixels, whereas the Fujifilm provides 101.8 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm GFX 100 is considerably larger (47 percent) than the Canon 30D. Moreover, the GFX 100 is substantially heavier (68 percent) than the 30D. It is noteworthy in this context that the GFX 100 is splash and dust-proof, while the 30D does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Concerning battery life, the 30D gets 750 shots out of its BP-511A battery, while the GFX 100 can take 800 images on a single charge of its NP-T125 power pack. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 30D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 86 percent) than the GFX 100, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 30D features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm GFX 100 a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the GFX 100 is 326 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 0.79. The sensor in the 30D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GFX 100 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 101.8MP, the GFX 100 offers a higher resolution than the 30D (8.2MP), but the GFX 100 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 6.42μm for the 30D). Yet, the GFX 100 is a much more recent model (by 13 years and 3 months) than the 30D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GFX 100 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm GFX 100 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the GFX 100 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 58.2 x 43.7 inches or 147.9 x 110.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 46.6 x 34.9 inches or 118.3 x 88.8 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 38.8 x 29.1 inches or 98.6 x 74 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon 30D are 17.5 x 11.7 inches or 44.5 x 29.7 cm for good quality, 14 x 9.3 inches or 35.6 x 23.7 cm for very good quality, and 11.7 x 7.8 inches or 29.7 x 19.8 cm for excellent quality prints.

The GFX 100 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.

The Canon EOS 30D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600, which can be extended to ISO 100-3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm GFX 100 are ISO 100 to ISO 12800, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-102400.

In terms of underlying technology, the 30D is build around a CMOS sensor, while the GFX 100 uses a BSI-CMOS imager. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The GFX 100 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 30D does not. The highest resolution format that the GFX 100 can use is 4K/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The 30D has one, while the GFX 100 does not. While the built-in flash of the 30D is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the GFX 100 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).

The Fujifilm GFX 100 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.

The 30D writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the GFX 100 uses SDXC cards. The GFX 100 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the 30D only has one slot.

It is notable that the GFX 100 offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the 30D does not provide wifi capability.
