Canon 1D C vs SX530
The Canon EOS-1D C and the Canon PowerShot SX530 HS are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in April 2012 and January 2015. The 1DC is a DSLR, while the SX530 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a full frame (1DC) and a 1/2.3-inch (SX530) sensor. The 1DC has a resolution of 17.9 megapixels, whereas the SX530 provides 15.9 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon SX530 is considerably smaller (62 percent) than the Canon 1D C. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1DC is splash and dust resistant, while the SX530 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the SX530 has a lens built in, whereas the 1DC is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 1DC gets 1120 shots out of its LP-E4N battery, while the SX530 can take 210 images on a single charge of its NB-6LH power pack. As can be seen in the images above, the 1DC has a battery grip built in. This facilitates image-taking in portrait orientation and gives it additional battery power.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The SX530 was launched at a lower price than the 1DC, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D C features a full frame sensor and the Canon SX530 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the SX530 is 97 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 5.6. The sensor in the 1DC has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the SX530 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 17.9MP, the 1DC offers a higher resolution than the SX530 (15.9MP), but the 1DC nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.95μm versus 1.33μm for the SX530) due to its larger sensor. However, the SX530 is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 8 months) than the 1DC, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the SX530 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Canon 1D C implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the 1DC for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 25.9 x 17.3 inches or 65.8 x 43.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 20.7 x 13.8 inches or 52.7 x 35.1 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 17.3 x 11.5 inches or 43.9 x 29.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon SX530 are 23 x 17.3 inches or 58.5 x 43.9 cm for good quality, 18.4 x 13.8 inches or 46.8 x 35.1 cm for very good quality, and 15.4 x 11.5 inches or 39 x 29.3 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon EOS-1D C has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 51200, which can be extended to ISO 50-204800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon PowerShot SX530 HS are ISO 100 to ISO 3200 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the 1DC provides a higher video resolution than the SX530. It can shoot video footage at 4K/24p, while the SX530 is limited to 1080/30p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the 1DC has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. One feature that is present on the 1DC, but is missing on the SX530 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.
The 1DC writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the SX530 uses SDXC cards. The 1DC features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the SX530 only has one slot.

It is notable that the 1DC has a hotshoe, while the SX530 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.
Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D C (unlike the SX530) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the 1DC and the SX530 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The SX530 was replaced by the Canon SX540, while the 1DC does not have a direct successor. However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.
