Canon 1D C versus Canon G7 X Mark II

The Canon EOS-1D C and the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in April 2012 and February 2016. The 1DC is a DSLR, while the G7X Mark II is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a full frame (1DC) and an one-inch (G7X Mark II) sensor. The 1DC has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the G7X Mark II provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G7 X Mark II is considerably smaller (75 percent) than the Canon 1D C. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1DC is splash and dust resistant, while the G7X Mark II does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G7X Mark II has a lens build in, whereas the 1DC is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 1DC gets 1120 shots out of its LP-E4N battery, while the G7X Mark II can take 265 images on a single charge of its NB-13L power pack. As can be seen in the images above, the 1DC has a battery grip build in. This facilitates image-taking in portrait orientation and contributes to its long-lasting power supply.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G7X Mark II was launched at a lower price than the 1DC, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1D C vs Canon G7 X Mark II

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D C features a full frame sensor and the Canon G7 X Mark II an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G7X Mark II is 87 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 2.7. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the G7X Mark II offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 17.9 MP of the 1DC. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 6.95μm for the 1DC). However, it should be noted that the G7X Mark II is much more recent (by 3 years and 10 months) than the 1DC, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the 1DC provides a higher video resolution than the G7X Mark II. One feature that is present on the 1DC, but is missing on the G7X Mark II is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The G7X Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 1DC has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the 1DC from Canon.

So how do things add up? Is the Canon 1D C better than the Canon G7 X Mark II or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS-1D C:

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the 1DC comes out slightly ahead of the G7X Mark II (11 : 10 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
