Canon 1300D versus Sony RX10 IV

The Canon EOS 1300D (called Canon T6 in some regions) and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in March 2016 and September 2017. The 1300D is a DSLR, while the RX10 IV is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (1300D) and an one-inch (RX10 IV) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the Sony provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony RX10 IV is somewhat smaller (4 percent) than the Canon 1300D. It is noteworthy in this context that the RX10 IV is splash and dust-proof, while the 1300D does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the RX10 IV has a lens build in, whereas the 1300D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 1300D gets 500 shots out of its LP-E10 battery, while the RX10 IV can take 400 images on a single charge of its NP-FW50 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 1300D vs Sony RX10 IV

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1300D features an APS-C sensor and the Sony RX10 IV an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the RX10 IV is 65 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.7. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the RX10 IV offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 17.9 MP of the 1300D. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 4.31μm for the 1300D). However, it should be noted that the RX10 IV is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 6 months) than the 1300D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the RX10 IV provides a better video resolution than the 1300D. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.

The RX10 IV is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 1300D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 1300D was succeeded by the Canon 2000D.
