Panasonic FZ2500 versus Panasonic ZS100

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2500 (called FZ2000 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100 (called Panasonic TZ100 in some regions) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2016 and January 2016. Both the FZ2500 and the ZS100 are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an one-inch sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 20 megapixel.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic ZS100 is considerably smaller (49 percent) than the Panasonic FZ2500. Moreover, the ZS100 is substantially lighter (66 percent) than the FZ2500. Cameras intended for semi-professional or professional use tend to be a bit bulkier in order to give them the necessary ruggedness. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the FZ2500 nor the ZS100 are weather-sealed.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The ZS100 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 42 percent) than the FZ2500, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an one-inch sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 2.7. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Sensor size

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 20 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the FZ2500 and the ZS100 have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the FZ2500 is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 months) than the ZS100, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (4K/30p).

Feature comparison

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The two cameras under consideration are similar with respect to both having an electronic viewfinder. However, the one in the FZ2500 offers a substantially higher resolution than the one in the ZS100 (2360k vs 1166k dots). Both the FZ2500 and the ZS100 have zoom lenses build in. The FZ2500 has a 24-480mm f/2.8-4.5 optic and the ZS100 offers a 25-250mm f/2.8-5.9 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the FZ2500 provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the ZS100. Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.

Both the FZ2500 and the ZS100 are current models that good online retailers will have in stock. You can check the latest prices, for example, at amazon. The ZS100 replaced the earlier Panasonic ZS50, while the FZ2500 followed on from the Panasonic FZ1000.

So how do things add up? Which of the two cameras – the Panasonic FZ2500 or the Panasonic ZS100 – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Reasons to prefer the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2500:

  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 603g or 66 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
  • Sharper images: Has stabilization technology build-in to reduce the impact of hand-shake.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (42 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in September 2016).
