Panasonic FZ2000 versus Panasonic LX15

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2000 (called Panasonic FZ2500 in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX15 (labelled Panasonic LX10 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public in September 2016. Both the FZ2000 and the LX15 are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an one-inch sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 20 megapixel. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LX15 is considerably smaller (55 percent) than the Panasonic FZ2000. Moreover, the LX15 is substantially lighter (66 percent) than the FZ2000. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the FZ2000 nor the LX15 are weather-sealed.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The LX15 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 42 percent) than the FZ2000, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, and both provide the same movie specifications (4K/30p).

Both the FZ2000 and the LX15 have zoom lenses build in. The FZ2000 has a 24-480mm f/2.8-4.5 optic and the LX15 offers a 24-72mm f/1.4-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the FZ2000 and LX15 provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the LX15 has less tele-photo reach at the long end. The LX15 offers the faster maximum aperture.
