Nikon D610 versus Nikon D7100

The Nikon D610 and the Nikon D7100 are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in October 2013 and February 2013. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are based on a full frame (D610) and an APS-C (D7100) sensor. The D610 has a resolution of 24.2 megapixel, whereas the D7100 provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D7100 is notably smaller (9 percent) than the Nikon D610. Moreover, the D7100 is markedly lighter (10 percent) than the D610. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The D7100 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 40 percent) than the D610, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Nikon D610 vs Nikon D7100

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon D610 features a full frame sensor and the Nikon D7100 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the D7100 is 57 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, the D7100 uses a more advanced image processing engine (EXPEED 4) than the D610 (EXPEED 3), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

With 24.2MP, the D610 offers a slightly higher resolution than the D7100 (24MP), but the D610 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.97μm versus 3.91μm for the D7100) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the D610 is a somewhat more recent model (by 7 months) than the D7100, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the D7100 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

D610 versus D7100 MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under review, the D610 provides substantially higher image quality than the D7100, with an overall score that is 11 points higher. This advantage is based on 0.9 bits higher color depth, 0.7 EV in additional dynamic range, and 1.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the D7100 provides a faster frame rate than the D610. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the D610 is limited to 1080/30p.

The D610 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Nikon. In contrast, the D7100 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the D7100 was succeeded by the Nikon D7200.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is the Nikon D610 better than the Nikon D7100 or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Advantages of the Nikon D610:

  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (40 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in February 2013).
