Nikon D2Xs versus Nikon D300

The Nikon D2Xs and the Nikon D300 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in June 2006 and August 2007. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 12.2 megapixel.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D300 is notably smaller (29 percent) than the Nikon D2Xs. Moreover, the D300 is markedly lighter (26 percent) than the D2Xs. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The D300 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 62 percent) than the D2Xs, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 1.52194470078621 (D2Xs) and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Even though the D300 has a slightly larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 12.2 megapixel. This implies that the D300 has a lower pixel density and marginally larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 5.53μm versus 5.52μm for the D2Xs), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. In addition, the D300 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 2 months) than the D2Xs, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time.

For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the D300 has a markedly higher DXO score than the D2Xs (overall score 8 points higher), which will translate into better image quality. The advantage is based on 0.099999999999998 bits lower color depth, 1.1 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.5 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Both the D2Xs and the D300 offer Live View, so that they make it possible to use the rear screen for framing. Both cameras are still-image focused and cannot record videos.

Both the D2Xs and the D300 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The D2Xs was replaced by the Nikon D3X, while the D300 was followed by the Nikon D300S.

So how do things add up? Is the Nikon D2Xs better than the Nikon D300 or vice versa? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Reasons to prefer the Nikon D2Xs:

  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (1150 versus 1000) on a single battery charge.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in June 2006).

Arguments in favor of the Nikon D300:

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the D300 is the clear winner of the contest (11 : 2 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features.
