Fujifilm X10 vs Sony A900
The Fujifilm X10 and the Sony Alpha A900 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2011 and September 2008. The X10 is a fixed lens compact, while the A900 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a 2/3 (X10) and a full frame (A900) sensor. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony A900 is considerably larger (123 percent) than the Fujifilm X10. It is noteworthy in this context that the A900 is splash and dust-proof, while the X10 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The X10 was launched at a lower price than the A900, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X10 features a 2/3 sensor and the Sony A900 a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the A900 is 1386 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 3.9 and 1.0. The sensor in the X10 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the A900 offers a 3:2 aspect.
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.
With 24.4MP, the A900 offers a higher resolution than the X10 (12MP), but the A900 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.94μm versus 2.20μm for the X10) due to its larger sensor. However, the X10 is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 11 months) than the A900, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X10 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Sony A900 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the A900 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 30.2 x 20.2 inches or 76.8 x 51.2 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 24.2 x 16.1 inches or 61.4 x 41 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 20.2 x 13.4 inches or 51.2 x 34.1 cm. The corresponding values for the Fujifilm X10 are 20 x 15 inches or 50.8 x 38.1 cm for good quality, 16 x 12 inches or 40.6 x 30.5 cm for very good quality, and 13.3 x 10 inches or 33.9 x 25.4 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Fujifilm X10 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200, which can be extended to ISO 100-12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Sony Alpha A900 are ISO 200 to ISO 3200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-6400.
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the A900 offers substantially better image quality than the X10 (overall score 29 points higher). The advantage is based on 3.2 bits higher color depth, 1 EV in additional dynamic range, and 2.5 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The X10 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the A900 does not. The highest resolution format that the X10 can use is 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The X10 and the A900 are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X10 has one, while the A900 does not. While the built-in flash of the X10 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The X10 writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the A900 uses Compact Flash or Memory Stick PRO Duo cards. The A900 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the X10 only has one slot.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Sony A900 (unlike the X10) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the X10 and the A900 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The A900 was replaced by the Sony A99, while the X10 was followed by the Fujifilm X20. Advantages of the Fujifilm X10:
