Fujifilm X10 vs Nikon D2H
The Fujifilm X10 and the Nikon D2H are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2011 and July 2003. The X10 is a fixed lens compact, while the D2H is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a 2/3 (X10) and an APS-C (D2H) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 12 megapixels, whereas the Nikon provides 4 MP.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The X10 was launched at a lower price than the D2H, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X10 features a 2/3 sensor and the Nikon D2H an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the D2H is 522 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 3.9 and 1.5. The sensor in the X10 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the D2H offers a 3:2 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the Fujifilm X10 offers a higher resolution of 12 megapixels, compared with 4 MP of the Nikon D2H. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.20μm versus 9.50μm for the D2H). However, it should be noted that the X10 is much more recent (by 8 years and 1 month) than the D2H, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X10 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm X10 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X10 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 20 x 15 inches or 50.8 x 38.1 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 16 x 12 inches or 40.6 x 30.5 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 13.3 x 10 inches or 33.9 x 25.4 cm. The corresponding values for the Nikon D2H are 12.3 x 8.2 inches or 31.3 x 20.7 cm for good quality, 9.9 x 6.5 inches or 25 x 16.6 cm for very good quality, and 8.2 x 5.4 inches or 20.9 x 13.8 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Fujifilm X10 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200, which can be extended to ISO 100-12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Nikon D2H are ISO 200 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 200-6400.
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

This advantage is based on 1.6 bits higher color depth, 1.3 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.5 stops of reduced low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The X10 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the D2H does not. The highest resolution format that the X10 can use is 1080/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X10 has one, while the D2H does not. While the built-in flash of the X10 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The X10 writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the D2H uses Compact Flash cards.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Nikon D2H (unlike the X10) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the X10 and the D2H have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The D2H was replaced by the Nikon D2Hs, while the X10 was followed by the Fujifilm X20.
