Canon S120 vs Nikon D2X
The Canon PowerShot S120 and the Nikon D2X are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in August 2013 and September 2004. The S120 is a fixed lens compact, while the D2X is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a 1/1.7-inch (S120) and an APS-C (D2X) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 12 megapixels, whereas the Nikon provides 12.2 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D2X is considerably larger (302 percent) than the Canon S120. It is noteworthy in this context that the D2X is splash and dust-proof, while the S120 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the S120 has a lens built in, whereas the D2X is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the S120 gets 230 shots out of its NB-6LH battery, while the D2X can take 3800 images on a single charge of its EN-EL4a power pack. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The S120 was launched at a lower price than the D2X, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon S120 features a 1/1.7-inch sensor and the Nikon D2X an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the D2X is 765 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 4.5 and 1.5. The sensor in the S120 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the D2X offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 12.2MP, the D2X offers a higher resolution than the S120 (12MP), but the D2X nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.52μm versus 1.89μm for the S120) due to its larger sensor. However, the S120 is a much more recent model (by 8 years and 11 months) than the D2X, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.
The Canon PowerShot S120 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Nikon D2X are ISO 100 to ISO 800, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-3200.
In terms of underlying technology, the S120 is build around a BSI-CMOS sensor, while the D2X uses a CMOS imager. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The S120 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the D2X does not. The highest resolution format that the S120 can use is 1080/60p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The S120 has one, while the D2X does not. While the built-in flash of the S120 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The Canon S120 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.

It is notable that the S120 offers wifi support, while the D2X does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.
Studio photographers will appreciate that the Nikon D2X (unlike the S120) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
