The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The Canon R5 C was launched in the US market at a price of $4,499. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison with a 35mm slide
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
The Canon R5 C features a full frame sensor and has a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.0. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the Canon R5 C among the large-sensor cameras that aim for top notch image quality.
For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). The adjacent table reports on the physical sensor characteristics and the outcomes of the DXO sensor quality tests for a sample of alternative cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The R5 C indeed provides movie recording capabilities. The highest resolution format that the R5 C can use is 8k/60p.
Feature comparison
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the R5 C has an electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 5760k dots. The viewfinder offers a field of view of 100% and a magnification of 0.76x. The following tables report on some other key feature differences and similarities of the Canon R5 C and comparable cameras.

The LCD screen on the Canon EOS R5 C is flexibly attached to the body. In particular, the LCD is hinged on the side and can be flipped out for odd-angle shots in both portrait and landscape orientation. Also, this fully articulated, swivel type of LCD attachment is often appreciated by videographers for its flexibility. Moreover, v-loggers like the design because the screen can be turned to be front-facing.
One useful feature of the R5 C is a presence of a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.
Connection comparison
For some imaging applications, the extent to which a camera can communicate with its environment can be an important aspect in the camera decision process. The table below provides an overview of the connectivity of the Canon EOS R5 C and, in particular, the interfaces the cameras (and selected comparators) provide for accessory control and data transfer.

It is notable that the R5 C has a microphone port. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.
Further information on the features and operation of the R5 C can be found in the free online Canon R5 C Manual or on the Canon support site.
Expert reviews
While the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the R5 C. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is why expert reviews are important. The table below summarizes the assessments of some of the best known camera review sites (amateurphotographer [AP], cameralabs [CL], digitalcameraworld [DCW], dpreview [DPR], ephotozine [EPZ], photographyblog [PB]).

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. Also, kindly note that some of the listed sites have over time developped their review approaches and their reporting style.
Canon R5 C FAQ
Below are some additional questions and answers concerning some particular features of the R5 C.
What technology is the imaging sensor in the Canon R5 C based on?
The camera has a CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensor at its core.
Which image processing chip is used in the Canon R5 C to convert the raw signal into an image file and perform noise reduction and image sharpening?
Canon equipped the R5 C with the DIGIC X image processor.
What is the ISO sensitivity range of the Canon R5 C?
The camera has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 51200, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400.
Does the Canon R5 C have a selfie-friendly screen?
Yes, the LCD-screen of the R5 C is flexible and can be turned to be front-facing for capturing selfies.
What is the life expectancy of the shutter in the Canon EOS R5 C?
Canon does not publish a shutter rating for the R5 C. Yet, shutters in comparable cameras from other manufacturers are said to be good for at least 300 000 actuations. It should be noted, though, that this number represents a Mean Time before Failure. The shutter might fail earlier, or it might last longer. Anyway, in order to exhaust an expected shutter life of 300 000 shots over, say, three years, one would have to take about 300 pictures each and every day.
How do I find the shutter count on my Canon R5 C?
Canon embeds the number of shutter actuations in the camera firmware. You can check the number of shots that your R5 C has taken up to now by using a third-party app, as described on the Canon R5 C shutter count page.
Is completely silent shooting possible with the Canon R5 C?
The camera has an electronic shutter option, so that it is indeed feasible to capture images without any shutter noise.
Do I need to purchase an external camera trigger to shoot time-lapse sequences with the Canon R5 C?
No, the Canon EOS R5 C has an intervalometer built-in, so that low frequency shooting (for example, flower blooming, sunset, moon rise) can be undertaken without the need to purchase a separate external intervalometer and related software.
Is it difficult to use manual focus lenses with the Canon R5 C?
The R5 C offers focus peaking as a manual focus aid. This feature works by placing a colored highlight on in-focus zones within the image.
Does the Canon R5 C feature an autofocus assist light?
Yes, the camera has a lamp built-in that can illuminate the subject and improve autofocus in low-light settings.
What is the fastest shutter speed that can be used with the Canon R5 C for flash photography?
The R5 C's flash sync speed is 1/250 sec.
Does the Canon R5 C support the Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus interface for SD cards?
Yes, the camera can indeed use UHS-II cards, which provide for data transfer speed of up to 312 MB/s, in both of its card slots.
Which battery does the Canon R5 C use?
The camera gets its power from the Canon LP-E6NH (here at amazon), which is a rechargeable Lithium-Ion power pack.
Is there a vertical grip available for the Canon R5 C?
Yes, Canon offers the BG-R10 as an optional accessory to facilitate shooting in portrait orientation and to provide additional battery power.
Where can I find the best deals for the Canon R5 C?
Grey imports from Asia, as found on ebay, are often very attractively priced. However, these cameras come without a warranty from Canon.
