If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D3X is considerably larger (195 percent) than the Canon G5 X. It is noteworthy in this context that the D3X is splash and dust-proof, while the G5X does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The G5X was launched at a lower price than the D3X, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G5 X features an one-inch sensor and the Nikon D3X a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the D3X is 643 percent bigger. The Canon PowerShot G5 X has a native sensitivity range from ISO 125 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 125-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Nikon D3X are ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-6400.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The G5X has one, while the D3X does not. While the built-in flash of the G5X is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

It is notable that the G5X offers wifi support, while the D3X does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.
