Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The SX20 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 20 percent) than the G15, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. In terms of chip-set technology, the G15 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 5) than the SX20 (DIGIC 4), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Even though the G15 has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 12 megapixels. This implies that the G15 has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 1.89μm versus 1.53μm for the SX20), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. In addition, the G15 is much more recent (by 3 years) than the SX20, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time. The Canon PowerShot G15 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS are ISO 100 to ISO 3200 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both the G15 and the SX20 have zoom lenses built in. The G15 has a 28-140mm f/1.8-2.8 optic and the SX20 offers a 28-560mm f/2.8-5.7 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms).
