Canon G1 X Mark II versus Canon XC10

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II and the Canon XC10 are two enthusiast cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in February 2014 and April 2015. Both the G1X Mark II and the XC10 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an 1.5-inch (G1X Mark II) and an one-inch (XC10) sensor. The G1X Mark II has a resolution of 13 megapixel, whereas the XC10 provides 12 MP. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G1X Mark II was launched at a markedly lower price (by 68 percent) than the XC10, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon G1 X Mark II vs Canon XC10

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G1 X Mark II features an 1.5-inch sensor and the Canon XC10 an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the XC10 is 53 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.85 and 2.75. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

With 13MP, the G1X Mark II offers a slightly higher resolution than the XC10 (12MP), but the G1X Mark II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.49μm versus 3.20μm for the XC10) due to its larger sensor. However, the XC10 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 1 month) than the G1X Mark II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the XC10 provides a better video resolution than the G1X Mark II. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the G1X Mark II is limited to 1080/30p.

Both the G1X Mark II and the XC10 have zoom lenses build in. The G1X Mark II has a 24-120mm f/2.0-3.9 optic and the XC10 offers a 24-240mm f/2.8-5.6 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the G1X Mark II and XC10 provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the XC10 has more tele-photo reach at the long end. The G1X Mark II offers the faster maximum aperture.

The G1X Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the XC10 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the XC10 was succeeded by the Canon XC20.

So how do things add up? Is the Canon G1 X Mark II better than the Canon XC10 or vice versa? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Reasons to prefer the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II:

  • Better low-light imaging: Features bigger pixels on a larger sensor for better high-ISO images.
  • Faster shutter: Has higher mechanical shutter speed (4000/sec vs 2000/sec) to freeze action.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
