Canon 100D versus Fujifilm X30

The Canon EOS 100D (called Canon SL1 in some regions) and the Fujifilm X30 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in March 2013 and August 2014. The 100D is a DSLR, while the X30 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (100D) and a 2/3 (X30) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 12 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X30 is notably smaller (20 percent) than the Canon 100D. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the 100D nor the X30 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X30 has a lens build in, whereas the 100D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the 100D gets 380 shots out of its LP-E12 battery, while the X30 can take 470 images on a single charge of its NP-95 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 100D vs Fujifilm X30

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 100D features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm X30 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the X30 is 83 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 3.9. The sensor in the 100D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the X30 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 17.9MP, the 100D offers a higher resolution than the X30 (12MP), but the 100D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 2.20μm for the X30) due to its larger sensor. However, the X30 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 5 months) than the 100D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X30 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

100D versus X30 MP

For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the X30 provides a faster frame rate than the 100D. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.

The X30 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the 100D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 100D was succeeded by the Canon 200D.
